Genoa International Poetry Festival

X International Poetry Festival, June 17th - June 30th 2004

The tenth edition of the Festival, the edition of Genoa European Capital of Culture boast an audience of more than 20.000 people.
The festival, besides its usual evening activities at Palazzo Ducale, turned the town into a huge natural stage, presenting more than 60 events for free which included shows, meetings, lectures, displays, happenings.

Together with the travelling topic, the other main subject of the Edition 2004 of the Festival was "The Poetic Reconstruction of the Universe", a subject discussed in an international congress with more than 40 poets from all over the worls on 18th and 19th June. The meeting took place in the Auditorium Montale Teatro dell'Opera.

Among the people attending Lou Reed whose performance took place on June, 28 with a lecture of his poems , Lydia Lunch, who is considered one of the most brilliant and important performers, without forgetting poets of the classical school like the Nobel Prize Wole Soyinka (on june, 23) or Yusef Komunyakaa (on June, 20), Pulitzer Winner.
Legitimate the absence of Pete Sinfield, lyricist of the King Crimson, who had to record live with Jakko (Level 42) but an illness stopped him.

The festival went on with the reading of Elio (without Le Storie Tese) and the performances of Sahinko, an extraordinary Syrian singer; of Richard Hell, who created the group "Richard Hell & the voidoids" and author of that punk hymn which is "Blank generation"; of Pedro Juan Gutierrez, cuban author of "Carne di cane" or of Howard Marks, alias Mr. Nice.

For whole 14 days it was possible to attend different poetic expressions through the works of the biggest authors of the world. Testimonial of this tenth edition was Edoardo Sanguineti, who is for sure the best known Italian poet abroad and to him were dedicated the opening performance and a monographic display with the title "Magazzino Sanguineti".

Among the various collateral events, the "Percorsi Poetici" guided walks in the biggest historical centre of Europe following the traces left by writers and poets in the centuries.

The soccer European championship which took place at the same time gave the possibility of listening for the first time comments and commentaries live by poets, resercher, artists for a new form of literature of the big popular events.
